THE USEFUL IDEA

An accurate number needs its definition, unit, period, source and limitation beside it.

Write the claim before choosing the number

Start with a complete sentence describing what you want to say. “The market is growing” is too broad to verify. A specific claim identifies the measure, geography, observation period and comparison. Then ask whether that claim is useful to the reader’s decision. This prevents a common publishing mistake: finding an impressive number and building a story around it after the fact. For a business website, the strongest data presentation explains what the evidence can support and what additional information the reader needs before acting.

Go back to the original table

Use a primary release or statistical table whenever it is available. A headline or social graphic may omit units, coverage or a footnote that changes the meaning. Record the publisher, document title, publication date and page or table number. Open the table and check its headings in both languages where provided. NUMU’s selected snapshot links to the relevant pages of the NCSI September 2026 bulletin so that the reader can inspect the basis of each figure. A source link should support the nearby claim, not merely point to an institution’s homepage.

Keep three dates separate

An observation period is when the measured activity occurred. A publication date is when the source released its report. A verification date records when your team checked it. These dates can be months apart without contradiction. The NUMU snapshot was verified on 29 October 2026, but includes Q2, January–July and August observations. Do not describe all of them as October data. When combining measures in a dashboard, keep the period visible on each card and avoid a common banner that implies every number represents the same month.

Check units, populations and overlapping totals

A value reported in OMR thousand must be converted deliberately before it is labelled OMR million. Subscriptions cannot be relabelled people, and registered population cannot automatically become a count of reachable buyers. A subset must not be added to a total that already contains it. In the selected dataset, fibre subscriptions sit within fixed broadband and plastics/rubber exports within non-oil goods. Write a short definition beside the metric before building the visual. This small step often catches errors earlier than reviewing the finished chart or presentation.

Explain the comparison honestly

Compare the same definition over matching periods, and label any different comparison explicitly. A change in a rate has two possible descriptions: a percentage-point difference and a relative percentage change. For example, the displayed hotel occupancy rates of 52.9% and 46.5% differ by 6.4 percentage points. Calling that a 6.4% relative decline would be wrong. Keep the calculation method visible and avoid false precision when inputs are rounded. A chart also needs a sensible scale; it should make the comparison understandable without exaggerating the apparent movement.

Publish a useful interpretation and an update trail

End with a limited implication, not an unsupported prediction. State what the figure suggests examining next, identify the missing evidence and name an owner for follow-up. Keep the source-derived fact separate from your editorial interpretation. When a value is corrected or revised, update the affected table, article and social material together and retain a short change note. This is a practical way for an online publication to earn trust over time: readers can trace the number, understand its boundaries and see how the publication maintains it.
